Melissa Knickerbocker was born in Potter County, Pennsylvania 28 December 1847. She married Phillip Minor/Miner and had one daughter, Orpha Evangeline. They moved to Iowa when Orpha was young. After Phillip’s death Melissa married George O. C. Bond and their first child, William Nelson, was born about 1862 (see the 1870 census). They had two more children and the youngest, George Frank, was born about November 1869 (see 1870 census). While the children were still young Melissa left with a man named Albert Noble and went to Illinois. They were located and arrested and she was released on the condition that she return home to take care of her children. However, once again she left with Albert Noble. This time they went to Michigan, where they married on the 10 July 1878 at Detroit. She is recorded as “Melly” on the marriage record. Shortly thereafter, in 1879, they moved to Hamilton, Ontario. Albert and Melissa, now going by the name Ellen, had three children, Effie and twins Albert and Alberta. Did her children in Iowa know that they had ½ siblings in Hamilton? But it is interesting to note that her son George Frank Bond did name a daughter Alberta Effie, which were the names of his two half-sisters.
