William Mercer http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5585224/person/-1240236851/media/1 WILLIAM MERCER - was born near Front Royal, Va. William spent his boyhood in Washington and Greene Counties, PA where he learned "coopering". In 1810 he married Betsy Houston of Green County and their daughter Sarah was born in 1811. In June 1812 he enlisted at Morgantown and served 18 months in the 12th Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry on duty in Canada and New England states. After returning to Monongalia County in 1814, he and his wife Betsy were divorced and he married Margaret Metz (born 1798) in June 1815. Soon after, he and Peggy leased 140 acres on Day's Run off Dunkard Creek west of Blackville, cleared part of the land for crops and built a cabin. They planted timothy, flax, wheat and garden crops. Acquired some cows, sheep, horses and began their family during the 1820s and 30s. Records show they were typically self-sufficent settlers making their own clothing, shoes, furniture, soap,,,
