A DISTICTIVE FLAGPOLE AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE WOODLAND CEMETERY IN HEBRON TOWNSHIP, NEAR COUDERSPORT, MARKS THE GRAVESITE OF U.S. NAVY COMMANDER PHILIP F. PALMATIER JR.
Potter County Veterans Service Committee members Bill Simpson, Paul Heimel and Dawn Wooster have been approached by members of the commander’s family and asked to seek a state designation of the bridge that carries traffic over the Allegheny River on Avenue A in North Coudersport/Rubbertown as the Commander Philip F. Palmatier Jr. Bridge. Representative Martin Causer is introducing the enabling legislation in the Pa. House of Representatives. Coudersport Borough Council has approved the bridge designation. American Legion Post 192 has agreed to participate in a dedication ceremony. Details will be announced. Family members chose the North Coudersport bridge because it’s close to Commander Palmatier’s childhood home, about one mile north of the bridge along Rts. 44-49.
Born Nov. 4, 1950, in Coudersport, he graduated with honors from the local high school in 1968 and was appointed to the United States Naval Academy. He became a career Naval officer and was flying a training mission on Dec. 10, 1990, when his TA-4 Skyhawk collided with another TA-4. A replica of his fighter jet is positioned atop the flagpole at the entrance of the woodland Cemetery.
The late Phillip Frank Palmatier Jr. is the son of the late Phillip Frank Palmatier Sr and Alfreda June Osborne, grandson of Sophia Emily Mosch and Harry Caleb Palmatier I, great grandson of Emil Ernest Mosch and Wilhelmina Hedwig Kortz, great great grandson of Karl Herman Mosch and Caroline Scheider.
