February 3 My grandfather's story: Aunt Lyn Howell left a great elision between this chapter, The Legacy, and my grandfather's fulfillment of that immigrant's idyll, and that gap begins with the death of his father in 1894, at age 35, when Otto himself was only 7. Aunt Lyn may have filled that gap with stories of Otto's work in the timber, the camps, the hotel, his apprenticeship and schooling, but I don't have her account of those years. (My mother also wrote about his childhood travails in her own memoir, The Way I Remember It. I'll post those separately.) Evelyn's rendition of Papa's memoirs picks up again years later, when he had bought his uncle Chris's store in Galeton, with his courtship and marriage to Mabel Burrous in 1910.
