BLACKBERRY PICKING
This 1940 photo depicts Hertha Mosch McElroy and her sister-in-law, Ina, getting ready to pick Blackberries. They had a special patch of berries some place on the Frinks Station farm. Years later, when I could go along, it was the first time I ever saw my grandmother McElroy in overalls. Covering every square inch of your body was a requirement when trudging through those briers.
Hertha is the granddaughter of Carl and Caroline Scheider Mosch, Jacob and Katherine Pflugfelder Kortz .

Stories of bears always came up when picking blackberries. I suppose we were encroaching on some of their hibernation fat building diet.

Paul Lynn Gardner Our Mom was upset that Papa Mosch told us about the bears but I think he gave us a good lesson in Wildlife respect. Perhaps he wanted to be sure that we didn’t wander too far. Those berries were delicious!
