• Important County 'Bank' May Fail
Lack of regular new deposits leads to a shortage of principal in one of Potter County's most important banks, and might even force it out of business. Withdrawals from the bank obviously can not continue unless proportionately large and regular deposits are made. We happen to be describing the plight of the blood bank at the Potter County Memorial Hospital rather than a financial institution, but the comparison is apt. There are numerous occasions when blood is of more value than money. The facts are these: In recent bloodmobile visits Coudersport and area have fallen so mucih below the quota of 125 pints of blood per visit that our local hospital has heen dropped from a top priority to a low one.

This means that we do not get first call on available blood. Our needs are met only after hospitals with higher priorities have had their requirements satisfied. It has meant that several times in the last four months we have had to use the old "walking blood bank" system. Donors have to picked from-a list at the hospital, called by phone, cross - matched against the patient's blood, then have a pint of blood drawn. , .'These procedures may take , two or three hour's' time while patients are in great need of blood, and they may need to 'Bank' May Fail be done in the middle of the night.

When we are in a top-priority in the Red Cross blood bank system, the blood is almost always ready in a refrigerator at the hospital. It can be cross-matched and transfused in only a few minutes instead of several hours. New ' deposits (regularly meeting our quota) will build up our principal (raise us to a high priority. Blood, unlike money, deteriorates gradually in storage. It can be stockpiled for only a relatively short time, about a month.

The supply must be constantly renewed, not only because of short storage time, but because of course, the blood is being used up by patients from this area in our hospital or in other hospitals. On Wednesday, November ' 13, 1957 from 11:45 a. m. to 5:45 p. m the Red Cross bloodmobile will again be at the Coud.ersport Consistory.

Every healthy adult from 18 to 59 (18 to 21 with parent's consent) can safely give blood. Persons may donate blood about six weeks after an attack of flu or 24 hours after receiving an injection of flu vaccine. You will never know when you or your family will need a blood transfusion. You will receive someone else's blood. .

Now, when you are well, give your blood for someone else's benefit. Turn out for the November 13th and future regular visits of the bloodmobile to Coudersport.
