THE C.R. MOSCH GALETON STORE - Circa 1907

Susanne Brown sent me this very interesting photo of the Christian Mosch Store in Galeton for which many of us have not seen. According to the story told by our cousin Marjery Mosch in a 1936 genealogy:

“Christian R. Mosch was the youngest child, sixth son of Karl and Caroline Mosch. He was born at Germania November 18, 1874. On January 15, 1895 he married Elizabeth Flurschutz of DuBruce, NY born September 25, 1876. Christian owned and operated a hotel in Colesburg during the lumbering history of that town. He later conducted a general store there. From Colesburg he moved to Galeton where he opened a clothing store. It was this business which Otto C. Mosch bought. From there Chris moved to Elmira where he still lives and where he has a men’s clothing store.”

This dry goods store and the grocery store on the left, was purchased by Chris Mosch’s nephew, Otto Carl Mosch in 1908. Otto had worked for Chris prior to the purchase for about a year and a half.

I recognize some of the people in the center of the photo: Christian Mosch (1874-1964), his wife Elizabeth Flurschutz (1876-1950), their daughter Mabel Mosch in the wheelchair (1895-1939), I think the boys on the right are their sons, Walter Davey Mosch, on far right (1896-1969) and Glenn Ernest Mosch, next to Chris (1903-1986).

They were married in 1896, according to the NYS Marriage Index. Interesting that he operated in Colesburg before moving to Galeton and that Pappa/Otto bought his Galeton store.
