Beloved family doctor dead at 90
OCTOBER 8, 1922 - AUGUST 19, 2013
George C. Mosch, MD, 90, of Coudersport, died Aug. 19, 2013, in his home after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Galeton, the fourth of eight children to Otto C. and Mable (Burrows) Mosch.
He graduated from Galeton High School then studied premed at Penn State University while serving in the Army’s accelerated war program during World War II. Dr. Mosch attended medical school at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia from 1943-46, also in the accelerated war program. He served an internship at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1946-47.
He began his career in general practice and then specialized in family practice in Coudersport, from December 1947 until his retirement in 1997. He delivered 4,262 babies, reflecting his special interest in obstetrics.
Dr. Mosch served on the American Academy of Family Practice, the Board of Family Practice, Potter County Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He was an active member of the medical staff of Potter County Memorial Hospital and its successor, Charles Cole Memorial Hospital. He served several terms as president of the Cole Hospital Medical Staff, on the Board of Directors at Cole Hospital and on the hospital’s building and grounds committee after his retirement. He also served as physician to the Potter County Jail, Coudersport Area School District, physician on the field for home football games, and physician to the Potter County Home for many years.
Dr. Mosch was deeply devoted to community service. He was an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Coudersport, where he was a member of the choir and the governing board. He was a 12-gallon blood donor for the American Red Cross Blood Bank. He was actively involved and supportive of the Coudersport Area Chamber of Commerce, with a particular commitment to attracting and supporting local employers.
Dr. Mosch was also a member of the Community Chorus, Barbershop Harmony Society, Potter County Historical Society, Pennsylvania Lumber Museum Associates, Potter County Visitors Association (PCVA), Habitat for Humanity and Coudersport Shade Tree Commission.
He received many honors over the years - Citizen of the Year from American Legion Post 192, lifetime membership by PCVA, Paul Harris Fellowship Award from Rotary International (the first non-Rotarian to be so honored), Citizen of the Month from WFRM Radio Station, and others.
He enjoyed reading, following local, national and worldwide news developments, making minor repairs at home and church, picking and sharing watercress and discussing issues with friends and families. He was also an amateur historian and an avid watershed enthusiast, with a particular interest in the “triple divide” headwaters in northern Potter County.
Dr. Mosch was a generous supporter of numerous charitable and community causes. He and Doris were well-known for their dancing skills.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Doris Wilkinson; five children, Barbara E. Mosch (Greg Stoicheff) of State College, Steven P. Mosch (Deb) of Savannah, Ga., Amy M. Boardman of Coudersport, Sally A. Fowler (Todd Hilliard) of Coudersport, and Luke A. Mosch (Debra) of Lancaster; a brother, Paul G. Mosch D.D.S; a sister, Evelyn Howell; numerous nieces and nephews, 11 grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren.
Dr. Mosch was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth P. Mosch MD; two sons, two brothers, three sisters, and his parents.
Memorial donations may be made to First United Presbyterian Church, 402 N. Main St; Potter County Hospice, 1001 E. Second St.; Coudersport Public Library, Park Ave; or Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, 1001 E. Second St., all at Coudersport PA 16915.
Visitation will be held today (Saturday, Aug. 24), from Noon to 2 pm at the First United Presbyterian Church of Coudersport, with a memorial service to follow with the Rev. Evon Lloyd officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fickinger Funeral Home.
