Galeton Galeton was first called Pike Center and then Pike Mills. After the Gale Tannery located there in 1881, the area flourished and took its name after William Gale, who founded the tannery. It was the largest town in the county in the 1900's when the population exceeded 4,000 and it became the headquarters for the Buffalo and Susquehanna Railroad and the Goodyear operations. The West Branch Valley had several large industries, including the Emporium Lumber Company. This valley still buzzes with industrial activity.
