Crossing In
ALLEGANY - Instant death came to Joseph W. Snyder, sixty years of age, Donald Bovaird, eleven, and Donald Dentler, nine, all of Allegany, when a truck in which they were riding was struck on the Fifth Street crossing of the Erie Railroad in Allegany by an east bound special passenger train late Tuesday afternoon. The truck was completely demolished by the collision which also derailed the pony trucks of the locomotive of the train.
The accident occurred at three (15:45h) as Mr. Snyder, one of the proprietors of the Snyder and Grandusky Feed Mill in Allegany, was driving the truck on Fifth Street to a car of feed on the Erie siding which he was engaged in unloading. The two boys had asked to ride on the truck with him. His fondness for children led him many times to take boys riding with him on the short trips between the railroad station and the feed mill.
INVESTIGATION FOLLOWS
There were no withnesses to the accident and Coroner C.J. Hosmer, in rendering a verdict of accidental death, after investigating the case with State Trooper D.H. Chamberlain of the Allegany sub-station, said today that the clear and unobstructed view of the railroad track on each side, together
______
with Mr. Snyder's familiarity with the spot made the cause of the accident difficult to determine.
In the collision the truck was smashed to pieces and the bodies of the three occupants were hurled from the vehicle to the side of the tracks. The locomotive, partly derailed by the crash, rode the rails for a short distance, carrying with it the remnants of the wrecked truck.
The train was the second section of Train 8, proceeding east and was in charge of Conductor E.A. Wallen, Hornell, with Brakemen John Drone, Salamanca, and F.M. Marshall, Hornell. The engineer and fireman were J.C. Cleesattle and J. Knightlinger, both of Hornell. A locomotive was sent from Salamanca to pull the train back to that city in order for it to take the west bound track, to continue its journey.
Joseph W. Snyder was born near Coudersport, Pa and had been a resident of Allegany for the past 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Orilla Snyder, his sister, Mrs. Bert Kellogg, Shinglehouse, Pa, and his brother, Frederick Snyder, Coudersport, Pa. He was a member of the Allegany Methodist Church and of Allegany Lodge of Odd Fellows. He rsided at 21 North Fifth Street.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon (February 23, 1945) at (14:00h) at the Methodist Church, allegany. The Rev. G.E. Manning of Olean will officiate. Burial will be in the Protestant Cemetery, Allegany.
