John Christy Wetzel Also taken from Dutch Hill, further up than the previous pic. If so, my (great) Uncle Ray (William Raymond) Tauscher, one of the great local contractors / carpenters in Coudersport, was born 27 April 1913 in that house, as he told me any time we rode by it. How I miss that man! I learned so much from him. I wonder what the ratio of home births to hospital births was back then; from what I've seen in my research, it was high. I wonder what it is now...

John Christy Wetzel Well, this got me thinking and it wasn't difficult to find out. In case anyone is interested- per Wikipedia- In the United States there was a large shift towards hospital births beginning around 1900, when close to 100% of births were at home. Rates fell to 50% in 1938 and to fewer than 1% in 1955. Since 2000 a shift back towards home births has brought the rate up from 0.54% in 2004 to 0.72% in 2009 - and from other reading I've just done, home births are still below 1%. Adding birthing centers brings 'out of hospital' births even today to still less than 2% overall, in the USA.
