AGED RECLUSE FOUND DEAD IN LONELY HOME NOT FAR FROM SHINGLEHOUSE
Leonard C. Root, 71, Had Evidently Been Dead Several Days-Gas Field Workers Investigates When He Notes No Smoke or Other Signs of Life-Cows and Horses Nearly Famished-Local Officers Investigate.
When Raymond E. Baker, gas field worker, saw no tracks or signs of life at the humble home of Leonard C. Root, Friday morning he feared some misfortune had befallen the old gentleman. He investigated and found Root's lifeless body. He found also two horses and two cows that had not been watered for several days.
Constable John Chamberlin of Shinglehouse was notified, as were Sheriff S. B. Sawyer, Coroner P. R. Shaw and the motor police in Coopersport.
Investigation was made and it was evident that the unfortunate man had died of natural causes there was nothing to indicate foul play and Coroner Shaw decided an inquest was unnecessary.
Mr. Root was 71 years of age and he lived at Sweden Hill, near Coopersport. He had lived in the vicinity of Shinglehouse for a number of years. A son was accidentally shot a decade ago, and the whereabouts of his wife and sister are unknown.
Burial will be made in the cemetery at Sweden Hill on Sunday.
