• Drowning Accident.
Last Tuesday afternoon a party of four young people, composed of Enoch Rice, his sister, Mrs. Ellen Hubbard, Will Keator and his sister, all of whom live a short distance below town, were enjoying the skating on the river down near Maccabee Island. Rice was ahead drawing a sled, upon which was his sister, while behind came the other two, the boy next to the sled. A short distance below the island some one had been cutting ice, and the skaters came to the hole so suddenly that the three bead ones were unable to veer out, and they all plunged into the icy water.

Miss Keator was far enough behind so she escaped, and as she skated up Will Keator was grasping the edge of the ice, and the young girl soon helped him out. They soon had Mrs. Hubbard out, but Rice was not in sight and did not again come up and his body was not recovered until some time afterwards, the accident happening about 5 o'clock. When taken from the water a bruise was found clear across the forehead, indicating that he had either struck the ice or had been hit by one of the skates and perhaps rendered unconscious. He was aged about eighteen years, had always resided in this vicinity and was highly thought of.

The funeral occurred Friday morning at 9 o'clock and the remains were taken to Myrtle for burial.- -Eldred Eagle..
