OMG! This is our 1st cousin 2x removed, Iva! "Dirty John", as he was known among students at Alfred in the late '60's. He had barns full of... stuff. I visited him in 1968, looking for some... stuff (a helmet for a party). I met Aunt Ethel, his mother with whom he was living, one of Herbert's younger sisters. She was at the (dry) sink, scraping off food from the center of a plate that had food encrusted around the edge. John was very nice, talkative, as I remember him, and willing to rent out some junk at reasonable prices to us poor college students. John would have been about 62 years old, his mother 91, the last 37 of which as a widow.

They were paternal first cousins. Grandpa 'Johnnie' would have been about 4 years older than cousin 'Johnnie', 1902/ca1906. I haven't been able to get an actual birthdate for John Herdman yet, just estimates from censi.
