Wife of David Sheldon Hall, my 3rd great uncle.
Amanda was 18 years old when she married Mr. Purcell, boss over a gang of Irishmen on the Erie Canal. Olean said "Amanda was about as big as she (Olean was 4'11"), probably weighed 100 lbs, black as any Indian. Olean called her a "little black varmint" and said she was a scrapper. David and Amanda lived near the Seneca Indians. David's people called her "Old Black Hawk" whenever they got mad at her. She was of Holland Dutch with the dark coloring instead of light.
