Edward L. Gamble, 92, of Brookland, Ulysses, PA
Edward L. Gamble, 92, of Brookland, Ulysses, PA, died Monday, October 19, 2009 in his home.
Born October 27, 1916, in Alfred, NY, he was the son of Charles H. and Carrie Mae Eaton Gamble.
- On July 4, 1942, in Buffalo, NY, he married the former Ruth A. French, who survives.
A 1934 graduate of Lewisville Vocational School in Ulysses, he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Marienville, PA. He attended Penn State for three years studying pre-med and engineering and attended sheet metal school in Long Island, NY.
During World War II, he was employed with Bell Aircraft in Buffalo.
Moving to Brookland, he was a self-employed dairy farmer and carpenter and was employed as a draftsman at Worthington in Wellsville, NY.
Returning to college, he earned a degree in math education from Mansfield University in 1965 and a master's degree in 1970.
He was an elementary math teacher for 13 years with two years as building principal with the Northern Potter School District, retiring in 1978.
He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Brookland, where he had served as senior warden and treasurer for many years, Lewisville Lodge #556 F&AM in Ulysses, Coudersport Consistory, Ulysses Lions Club, the Tri-Town Volunteer Ambulance, serving as an ambulance attendant, and was a volunteer with Potter County Hospice. An avid reader, Ed pursued lifelong learning.
Surviving besides his wife, Ruth, are:
- a daughter, Phyllis (Alan) Scardina of Winston-Salem, NC;
two sons,
- Quentin A. (Bonnie) Gamble and
- Darrell (Patti) Gamble, both of Brookland;
seven grandchildren,
- Lori (Matt) Maughon,
- Michael (Debbie McDaniel) Scardina,
- John (Mandy) Scardina,
- Sara Gamble,
- Aimee Gamble,
- Emily Gamble, and
- Nick Gamble;
six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by
- a brother, Charles E. Gamble; and
two sisters,
- Sarah Snyder and
- Marcella Kocher.
Friends may call at the Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses, PA on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 from 2:00 -- 4:00 and 7:00 -- 9:00 PM, with a Masonic service at 8:30 PM. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday in the All Saints Episcopal Church, Brookland. The Rev. Gregory P. Hinton and the Rev. Carol Carlson will preside.
- Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
