  Divorced: 20180917HAv- Grandpa george Posted 17 May 2017 by LARRY HERBSTRITT Grandpa george was a tough man. His mother had died giving birth to him. He ended up being mostly raised by an asortment of different relatives. George dropped out of school when he was in elementary school and as a result never learned to read or write. As a young adult, he joined the army and eventually served in Vietnam. He came home and had some difficulty adjusting to life. He began to drink heavily. He was a welder by trade. he was married to Patricia Battles and had several children. After their divorce, he married Helen zamberlane, they had four children. by this point he had become an alcoholic. He was also diabetic type II as it runs in the family. He loved to do wood working and build things. He had a garage full of tools and projects he was always working on, of which his favorite was to make lawn oraments. my mother states that during her childhood, he had no contact with the children he had with patricia and that she frequently had him put into jail for not paying child support. She claimes he was a very levelheaded man who believed a woman's place was in the home and thus never allowed my grandmother to work. he was a strong disiplinarian, but because of his strong voice hardly ever had to spank. Grandpa George liked taking me and my brother camping, to the races, and for walks to the corner store to get penny candy. He often would come home from work we would be visiting. We would help him unlace his boots and then eat a big bowl of corn flakes with him as we told him about our day. He also enjoyed to eat sardines right from the can. Grandpa George went to the Dr. for one of his blood pressure checks. The doctor gave him a clean bill of health and even began weaning him off his medication. He went to bed next to Grandma that night and was found dead the next morning. he was 50. The report states he died of a massive heart attack. The week leading up to his death he insisted on paying off bills and getting things into grandma's name "just in case" Some of us believe he in a way knew he was dying. more memories Posted 17 May 2017 by LARRY HERBSTRITT What I remember from my childhood was him coming home from work and me walking over to see him. He called me "Tanda". When I was born apparently my nose was smushed so he called me "miss piggy". I can still remember the way that he used to say it. We used to eat cornflakes together and then I would unlace his work boots. he worked as a welder at Robinson steel. He would pull out his snuff box and put in some chew and then ask me about my day. after dinner was done and I had helped grandma wash the dishes I was allowed to watch TV with him. We used to watch Shirly temple, The andy grifith show, the shakiest gun in the west , and the news. on the weekends I was allowed to sleep over and did so very often. I do remember he had a leather strap that he had gotten as one of his anniversaries at work. He fashioned it into a paddle and if me or my brother misbehaved he would spank us with it. He only had to do it a few times because after that the fear of being spanked by it was enough to make you straighten up. He also used to like to tease us and take his false teeth out and tell us if we were bad he was going to put them on us which used to creep and gross me out. The teeth were not a deterant for my brother so he took him the one time and shook him and told him that you can only be shook twice and the second time you would die, so If he was really bad again and he had to shake him he would die. That scared the crap out of my brother so usually we were very good when grandpa was around. He was very strict about meal times and candy. If you recieved a piece of candy at any point during the day, I can remember him making me put it on my grandmothers table until after dinner. There were no exceptions. I can remember my fifth birthday. I wanted a shera princess of power doll so bad. I thought for sure Grandpa had gotten it for me. When I got to his gift and opened it, all I found inside was a hand made peach colored teddy bear. I was very bad and threw the bear on the floor and went under the table and cried. My mother pulled me out and told me the card in the bag had the money for me to buy the toy I wanted and that grandpa had used a whole lot of money to pay someone to make that doll for me. I can remember going to find him to appologize and finding him in the garage crying because I had been so bad. I snuck back out and never appologized because I was scared. I still feel bad about it to this day. I can remember for christmas that year I wanted to a pony paradise estate. I can remember grandpa taking me to the festival of lights to see santa to ask him for it. On christmas morning after I opened my last gift and it wasnt there I moped around the house disappointed that santa didn't get it for me. Grandpa came up and put his hand on my shoulder and with a twinkle in his eye told me that when he went to the basement that morning he had saw a package with my name on it. Aunt brenda went down to get it for me and twisted her ankle and fell down the basement stairs getting it, my uncle jeff went down to help her bring it up. It was a huge box. when I opened it inside was my pony paradise estate. I can remember grandpa and uncle jeff putting that thing together all afternoon on christmas for me. Once a week if we had been good and helped out with some chores like pulling dandelons from the yard, helping grandma, helping in the garden, ect. we were allowed to help him count pennies. He would then give me and my brother Ten cents or so and walk us to the little corner store (it was called chums at the time) and let us buy penny candy. We were however not allowed to eat it till after we had eaten all our dinner. I also remember him working in the garage. He loved woodworking and his favorite thing to make was lawn ornaments. He favorite one to make was the "little Jimmy" which was a little wooden boy with a fishing pole and a little fish on the end of his line. He used to give us a hammer and nails and some scrap wood to make things. I remember him working in the garden with grandma. We used to sew beans, peas, carrots, beets, and pumpkins. He was especially fond of his rotatillor. He loved doing yard work and used to give us rides on his riding lawn mower. Another favorite thing for him was camping. We used to go camping at Niagra woodlands every October he was alive. The whole family would go there and camp out. He also used to take us camping near my great aunt pats house in Olean. He also used to take me and my brother to whistle pigs. It was an ice cream shop that had small kiddy rides. We would get ice cream. I remember his favorite flavor was mint dingaling. the name of it used to make my brother and me laugh. Then afterwards we would ride on the rides. When I was between six and seven we moved to Arizona. My mother wanted to put me into the Little Miss Arizona pagent. Grandpa saved his pennies and paid my way for it. I had asked him to be the one to be my "date" (the person to walk me on stage). He was thrilled, Sadly however a month before the event he died suddenly in his sleep of a masive heart attack. I can remember we flew back home for his funeral. My brother and I were small at the time and I only remember bits and pieces. I remember seeing him in the coffin and saying to my mom that its not grandpa because he didn't have his "birds nest" swirl of hair in the front. My mother was pretty upset at the funeral. So much so that when we all left to go to the cemetary she left my brother behind in the funeral home with grandpas body and had to come back to get him. When we got to the cemetary my mother fell in a hole near his grave. Its kind of ironic because every time we have ever been up there to visit it, someone always falls in that hole.
