Ernst, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Sartwell Creek, passed away May 31, 1930. He was born in Hason Castle (Hessen-Kassel), Germany, April 5, 1848, being 82 years, one month and 25 days old at the time of his death. He was the youngest son of the late Tobias C. and Anna Elizabeth Smith Ernst, and at the age of five years, he with his parents and only brother sailed for this country, his birthday occurring while upon the water. The voyage across the water lasted nine weeks. Upon reaching this country, ... weeks. Upon reaching this country, the family moved to Sartwell Creek where his father purchased a farm, where the deceased has lived adjoining farms with his brother, for 66 years. His brother William H. Ernst preceeded him in death on October 11, 1923. On July 4, 1880 he was united in marriage to Lydia F. Lehman, to this union four children being born. Two died in infancy and Fred C. Ernst who resides at the old homestead and Irma A. Eckert of Roulette who with the widow survive him; also five grandchildren, Frankie, June and Jane Ernst and Florence and Charley Eckert. Funeral services were held at the Sartwell Creek church, June 3rd, words of comfort being spoken by Rev. Chas. Lee of Chandlers Valley, PA, assisted by Rev. Howard Duell of the home church. The floral offerings showed the esteem in which the deceasesd was held. Mr. Ernst was a charter member of Burtville Grange, No. 1281. 1John Christy Wetzel Like Comments ____________ ___ Lydia Ernst Dead ______ Highly Respected Resident of Sartwell Creek Died Friday After Long Illness ______ Lydia Frances Ernst passed away at her home on Sartwell Creek October 7, 1938, after several months of illness. She was born on Sartwell Creek September 27, 1857, to Jacob Lehman and Cyrena Starks Lehman. Her entier life had been spent in that community. She was 81 years old at the time of her death. Mrs. Ernst was a member of the United Brethren Church of Sartwell for 65 years. She was united in marriage to Frederick C. Ernst on July 4, 1880. He preceded her in death by eight years. To this union four children were born, two dying in infancy. Surviving are Fred C. Ernst of Sartwell Creek and Mrs. Emma Eckert of Roulette. Others surviving are five grandchildren, Frankie C., June and Jane Ernst, and Florence and Charles Eckert: a great grandson, Richard LaVerne Ernst, and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at the church in Sartwell Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Edward I. Peters officiating. Mrs. Charles Faulkner and Mrs. Carl Thompson of Roulette sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus". The pall bearers were John Wetmore, Lester Baum, Roy Frutiger, Harold Baker, Harry Rennells and Homer Taylor. Interment was in the Sartwell Creek cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful, showing the high esteem in which she was held. Bones broken and sustained a serious shock. Others of fimily injured but all are expected to recover and improving daily now. Had suscessfully passed the worst hill in the county.----Fred Ernst (Sr.), a Sartwell Creek farmer, was badly injured last week Thursday evening by being thrown from his wagon in a runaway. Mr. and Mrs. Ernst and two children had been to the Burr barn raising on Lillebridge Creek driving a pair of colts and were returning home. They had successfully passed down the worst hill in the county with the young team and had driven to the Beckwith farm when one of the horses jumped, breaking a rein. This swung the team against the bank, tipping up the wagon and throwing Mrs. ernst andthe family out. Mr Ernst was pulled over the dashboard of the wagon and was hurt so badly that he could hang on no longer and the team ran away. The children escaped with light bruises. Her face is bruised but not cut while the blow to the head rendered her unconscious for several hours and caused a concussion of the brain, although the skill is not broken or cracked. Their recovery will be slow. Their many Roulette friends sympathize with them in misfortune.
